Attention Designers
Don't forget (like I did :P ) that Martin has muscle, so draw him slightly more built. Also note that the grey underneath his armour is meant to be something akin to chainmail (because I drew the armour asymmetrically, which it isn't supposed to be), however that's probably very tedious to draw & animate so either substitute it for black/grey or don't be a doofus unlike someone I could mention (me) and draw his armour symmetrically. :B

...Design wise there were many problems that I won't go into unless asked directly so if you have an issue please tell me. Yes, I know I varied things quite a bit from "official" illustrations. There's reasons for that.

Bio
Character wise... well this is slightly silly but in case you didn't know this is Martin the Warrior, main-ish character of the book Mossflower! His past is a mystery (cough) but he claims to come from the Northlands. He is journeying aimlessly through Mossflower when he is spotted by Kotir guards. After giving them hell he is eventually captured and brought to Lord Verdauga Greeneyes, which is where the story of Mossflower starts. He's usually serious and calm as well as wise and definitely tough. He also has a sense of humor, which is more notably present when around his best bud forevar, Gonff. I think I can end it here since he's a pivotal character and his involvement in the plot is massive, so I'd be narrating the whole story otherwise. (Also, did you guys know Martin was based off [link] ? I just found that out! Look what doing research does!)

I'm not an animator, but I'm assuming it will be in Adobe Flash or something similar. Hand-drawn 2D, if that's what you mean.

how do you make bold and italicized text?
Reply
:iconeshva:
Eshva Featured By Owner Feb 23, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
It depends. What program do you have, and what version? I have Adobe Photoshop CS3, and to bold it I highlight the text and press alt+T, then select italize/bold. If you have Microsoft Paint, the Bold/Italics/Underline menu should appear once you select the text tool.

Ok, then you need to clarify that.

To bold text you wrap it in an html code. Basically it's this:

< b > text you want bolded here < / b >

...WITHOUT the spaces. The < b > means you begin the code and the < / b > means you close it, so remember that. Same with italics, only replace the 'b' with 'i'.

I really hate saying anything negative, because this really looks awesome. But some of that extra 'muscle' makes him look pretty fat, and from the side especially I'm imagining him with a beer and a big mac in each paw.

But once again I stress that I really like the art style (the sword is awesome) and his face is very well done. Just thought he looked a little pudgy there. :P

Uh no there's no muscle at at all, that's the problem. The pudge you're talking about is just me trying to be realistic in terms of animal anatomy, but apparently it's not working for most people. You're not the first to mention it though (and the big mac thing made me laugh).

Looking very sexy :D I'm sure there will be more advanced critique later as I run this past everyone but this is certainly getting better as it goes along :) The only suggestion I can give at the moment, and this is ONLY so that you could do an experimental drawing (at most) PLEASE do not make an entire character sheet or I'll feel bad for overtaxing you. But if you have time maybe see what Martin would look like if you made him more angular than rounded, as most male lead characters aren't as smooth on the edges, I know he is a friendly character but he looks a little too friendly at the moment, it might just be me though, so like I said don't do any more than some experimental drawings (if you have time) *BrevityRaccoon

Yeah =b I dunno, like I said this is just my opinion but I just feel Martin should be a little more aggressive looking, some look along the line of "I may be a tough warrior but I will never hurt anything" xD I dunno, just give it a shot if it doesn't work out maybe someone else will be able to put into words what I'm trying to get across =b But the designs are fantastic, I especially love the bottom look :D

I really like the detail you put into this. The armor must have taken a long time to plan out. Really like the wear and tear you show on his clothing near the bottom, the cloak is unreal. Also glad to see you got the blood channel on the reforged sword, and i really really like how you did the rusty blade. The scabbard was also a nice variation :). Keep up the good work, who're you planning on doing next?

I love it! :D Very magnificent design, just lovely!

However, like you said, there are some nitpicky things, but those are things that are easily fixable:

Martin's thighs and torso, I'd make them a little more slender, especially the the waist; its Gonff who has the paunch, remember? ;) :XD: (though thanks for giving me a visual for how to do Gonff's figure, I've been struggling with that! For now, don't change Martin's figure in this until I copy it for Gonff, 'kay? :D)

The back-views of Martin for his armor and tunic costumes, his.... er, hindquarters part, it really doesn't look like... a hindquarters, y'know? You see what I mean? *blush*

I LOVE the armor design, and I love his tunic design (in fact, his tunic costume looks like the one he wears on the American book cover of both "Martin the Warrior" and "Legend of Luke" :D ).

His third costume, however, is obviously the one he wears when he first comes to Mossflower, right? I love the cape, the way how you shaded it is magnificent, but the tunic itself, well... shouldn't it look like the one he wore in Season 3? Or at least a very tattered version of it?

But I still love the tunic you created here; maybe that could be for one of the Mossflower residents or something?

Btw, *LOVE* the rust on his old sword, that was awesome. :D I also love the headshots, especially the one with Martin looking at his helmet. Just awesome. :D

Um, well, actually I think I'll keep Martin's form as it is - he is, after all, a mouse, and we have so many more species to design that none of them will be recognizable if they're all slim and tall - you need to keep in mind their realistic anatomy. Mice are generally short and plumb, so therefore I'm going to draw all the mice short and plumb, with variation of course. I suppose I could try to make him "leaner" (it's true he's supposed to have muscle, I did forget that), but sorry, I'm sticking with this form for continuity, and logic.

Uh. Not really. ._. I don't really know what to say about Martin's backside. I guess you don't really want to but unless you specify I'm at a loss.

As for the third costume, well, I did a bit of thinking for that part. The narrative of Mossflower mentions that Martin sat at inn tables, so I'm guessing in some way he got his paws on some new/warmer duds. Plus, I tend to get carried away with detail, and figured I had enough in there to imply wear and tear.

I've got plenty more tunic designs, don't you worry, we won't run out :XD:

Thank you for the insight, though.

I realize that not all the animals are slim and tall, but you could still get away with not having Martin having the typical ';plump' look: after all, look at the mice in Nelvana's cartoon, they're not all that plump yet you can still tell straight away that they're mice.

But if you're more comfortable drawing like that, then fine. :) And I do see where you're coming from, so yeah. :D

Eh, about Martin's backside, well... oh forget about it. Its fine. :)

About the third costume, I think we should definately keep the cloak (I agree he could've gotten it from an inn or farm or something), but I'm still wondering if we should keep his old purple tunic, just so that people will recognize him sooner?

And your welcome. :D

Okay, I don't think that's a bad idea. The purple will definitely add some continuity. We'll see what others have to say.
